Five business premises in the Belait District were found to have committed offences under the Price Control Act, such as exceeding the fixed maximum price for goods, not displaying price tags, and not complying with sales regulations.
 
The offences were uncovered during surprise visits by the Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE), through the Consumer Affairs Division to several business premises in the Belait district yesterday. The 10-member delegation comprising officers and staff from JPKE, was led by Pengiran Hajah Siti Nirmala binti Pengiran Haji Mohammad, Acting Permanent Secretary (Economic and Finance) at the Prime Minister's Office.
 
Among the objectives of the visit is to ensure controlled goods under the Price Control Act, Chapter 142 namely cooking oil and formulated powdered milk are not sold over the maximum set price, while rice are not sold exceeding the fixed subsidised prices. The visit also intended to ensure that businesses comply with the Price Control Act, Chapter 142 and the Price Control Order which require goods sold to display clear price labels.
 
Businesses which are not in compliance with the Price Control Act can be handed a compound not exceeding $1,000.00, a fine of $5,000.00 and a 2 years' imprisonment as well as a $20,000.00 fine and a 5-year jail term for repeated offences. Meanwhile, businesses which are found to exceed the maximum prices set for the months of Ramadhan and Syawal will be liable to action such as being issued a warning notice.
 
For enquiries or complaints, members of the public can directly contact JPKE through the mobile application "SmartConsumer" or through telephone number 2230223 during office hours or e-mail to aduanpengguna@jpke.gov.bn or consumercomplaint@jpke.gov.bn, by attaching supporting documents and information such as receipts and the company's name for the purpose of initiating the investigation process.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has consented to send a congratulatory message to His Excellency Rodrigo Roa Duterte, President of the Republic of the Philippines, the Government and people of the Republic of Philippines on the occasion of its 119th Independence Day.
 
In the message, His Majesty expressed his great satisfaction for the long-standing friendship with the Philippines and pleased with the good progress achieved in the people-to-people exchanges and the increasing activities in the bilateral trade and investment. Furthermore, His Majesty also looked forward to continuing to work with His Excellency in enhancing the bilateral relations as well as close partnership in ASEAN and BIMP-EAGA.  In ending the message, His Majesty extended his kind regards and best wishes to His Excellency and also for the continued progress and prosperity of the people of the Republic of Philippines.

The Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE) advises members of the public to practice the 'Smart Consumer' concept when shopping by making price comparison before purchasing any goods. To ensure that all entrepreneurs in the country abide by the Price Control Act Chapter 142, and the Price Control Order, JPKE made surprise visits to business premises for the Price Controlled Goods, Setting of Maximum Prices on Selected Food Items during Festive Season and the 'Jualan Aneka Brunei' for the year 1438 Hijrah/2017.
 
The visit which began in Hua Ho Department Store, Gadong was led by Pengiran Hajah Siti Nirmala binti Pengiran Haji Mohammad, Acting Permanent Secretary of Economy and Finance at the Prime Minister's Office. Also joining the delegation was Awang Haji Asrul Adrain bin Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Ahmad, Acting Deputy Director General of JPKE. Among the objectives of the visits is ensure that the controlled goods namely cooking oil and milk does not exceed the maximum price, while sugar and rice are not being sold more than the subsidy. Observations were also carried out to monitor vendors taking part in Jualan Aneka Brunei (JAB). Towards inculcating the concept of "Smart Consumer", JPKE has launched the SmartConsumer app which provides a platform to compare prices.

​The blessed month of Ramadan continues to be glorified with religious ceremonies by various parties in the country. The Prime Minister's Office and its department this afternoon held a Tadarus. The ceremony was jointly organised by the Prime Minister's Office, the Department of Adat Istiadat Negara, the Audit Department, the Civil Service Department, the Department of Economic Development and Planning, Civil Service Commission, the Management Services Department and the Civil Service Institute.

 
The ceremony commenced with the presentation of endowment in the form of equipments needed by the mosque handed over by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti to Pengiran Haji Mohammad Hafizuddin bin Pengiran Haji Bakar, Imam of Kampung Belimbing Mosque in Subok. It was followed by mass tadarus ceremony led by the State Mufti. Among those present was Dato Paduka Awang Haji Mohamed Roselan bin Haji Mohamed Daud, the Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister's Office.

His Royal Highness Prince General Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and General of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, attended a Kesyukuran Ceremony in conjunction with the 56th Anniversary of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, RBAF.  The ceremony took place at Ad-difa' Surau, Ministry of Defence at Bolkiah Garrison.
 
Upon arrival, His Royal Highness was greeted by Retired First Admiral Dato Seri Pahlawan Awang Abdul Aziz bin Mohamad Tamit, Deputy Minister of Defence, and Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohammad Tawih bin Abdullah, the Commander of RBAF. The ceremony began with mass Fardhu Zohor prayer led by Awang Zulfadhli bin Haji Awang, the Imam of the Ministry of Defence Surau. The reading of surah Yasin and Tahlil was led by Awang Shuib bin Haji Abdullah, the Imam of the Ministry of Defence Surau, who also read the doa kesyukuran.
 
His Royal Highness the Crown Prince received junjung ziarah from the congregants. Among those present were members of the Defence Executive Committee, Military Commanders and Commandants, Directors, as well as Senior officers of the Ministry of Defence and the RBAF. Before leaving the ceremony, His Royal Highness signed the commemorative parchment. At its 56 years of age, RBAF is among the sectors that are entrusted with the responsibility to maintain the nation's harmony. RBAF has contributed to various meaningful developments and progress for the prosperity and security of the nation.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, yesterday received in audience the national qari and qariah, who placed second in the male and female Quran Recital categories of the 59th International Al-Quran Reading Competition held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The audience ceremony took place at Istana Nurul Iman. His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam received in audience Awangku Muhammad Adibul Amin bin Pengiran Haji Marjuki and Dayang Hajah Siti Noor Dzuhairah binti Haji Awang Damit.
 
Present were Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Othman, Minister or Religious Affairs, and his deputy minister, Dato Paduka Awang Haji Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud. In the message, His Majesty was shocked by the news of the explosion in Manchester, and was very saddened to learn of the resulting deaths and injuries. Present at King Salman Air Base to greet His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam were His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Abdulrahman, the Deputy Governor of Riyadh; and His Excellency Hisham bin Abdul Wahab Zaraa, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Saudi Arabia to Brunei Darussalam. Present at His Majesty the Sultan's Flight Hangar in Rimba to bid farewell to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah; His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Malik; His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Wakeel; Her Royal Highness Princess Ameerah Wardatul Bolkiah; and Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna, Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The Brunei Malay Entrepreneurs Federation, PPPMB has taken the initiative to design and develop the Youth Cubicle Project or a Cubicle Incubation Site for youth entrepreneurs at the Beribi Industrial Complex. The project will be in operation following an agreement signing ceremony with Darussalam Enterprise, DARe.


Signing on behalf of the Brunei Malay Entrepreneurs Federation was its President, Doctor Haji Abdul Latif bin Haji Chuchu, while DARe was represented by Javed Ahmad, its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. Present to witness the signing ceremony was Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Retired Colonel Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar, Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister's Office as the Chairman of the Board of DARe.


The Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister's Office in an interview said that the incubation space will provide opportunities for entrepreneurs to develop their products and services, as well as to take on valuable knowledge and experiences in running their businesses. Yang Berhormat Pehin said that the agreement illustrates the malay entrepreneurs' real desire to develop youths and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, which in turn can contribute to the country's economy. Once the site is operational within three months time, Yang Berhormat Pehin added that DARe will be working together with PPPMB to ensure that start-ups or youths are given the right courses, exposure and guidance to help them in running their businesses.

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office yesterday officiated the opening ceremony of Oil Country Tubular Goods, OCTG threading plant and service centre SC Tubular Solutions Sendirian Berhad, SCTSB and VAM-BRN Sendirian Berhad. The opening ceremony marks the country's success in attracting foreign direct investments as well as provides employment opportunities to locals.


Upon arrival, His Royal Highness was welcomed by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abd. Rahman bin Haji Ibrahim, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister of Finance; Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Retired Colonel Dato Seri Setia Doktor Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar, the Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister's Office, Mr. Ohashi Tomoyuki, Managing Director of VAM®BRN Sendirian Berhad and Mr. Stuart M'Cartney, General Manager of SCTSB Sendirian Berhad.


The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Hamid bin Bakal. In his opening remarks, Mr Ohashi Tomoyuki among others said that the operation will bring new local business development opportunities not only in the form of direct hires and local spend but also in ancillary support services. It also represents a fantastic opportunity for local staff to develop their technical and operational skill sets in learning from industry leading professionals.


The OCTG threading plant is one of the many successful realizations of foreign direct investments or FDIs in Brunei Darussalam and demonstrates the commitment of the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in attracting more FDIs to the country. The formation of Foreign Direct Investment and Downstream Industry (FDI-DI) Steering and Working Committee and FDI Action and Support Centre (FAST) has streamlined all FDI projects facilitation and approval process, contributing to the success of turning this FDI into a reality.


His Royal Highness then officiated the Oil Country Tubular Goods, OCTG threading plant and service center SC Tubular Solutions Sendirian Berhad and VAM-BRN Sendirian Berhad and received a Pasambah. Doa Selamat was read by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Hamid bin Bakal.


His Royal Highness also signed a plaque and toured the exhibition of the Oil Country Tubular Goods, OCTG threading plant and service center. The SCTSB and VAM-BRN OCTG FDI is worth up to 52 million US dollars. It has successfully provided employment to 87 locals which make up 78% out of the total work force. The FDI project is estimated to contribute about 7 million Brunei Dollars in annual local spending, besides providing various spin-offs opportunities to local SMEs that is required to support this project such as Logistics, Construction & Engineering and Metal Fabrication. This is also the first time that the pipe threading technology has been exported out of Japan.


His Royal Highness also toured the Threading Plant. VAM-BRN is a joint venture company set up in Brunei between Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC), Sumitomo Corporation and Vallourec Tubes S.A.S from France. The SCTSB is a Sumitomo Corporation Group company. For more than 40 years, NSSMC and Sumitomo have been supplying seamless (OCTG) pipes for drilling activities to Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd, BSP, a leading upstream oil and natural gas company in Brunei. In 2014, BSP, NSSMC and Sumitomo signed a contract to develop an integrated Supply Chain Management & local threading services of seamless Tubulars in Brunei, as part of their effort to increase local content including opportunities for local employment. VAM-BRN commenced OCTG local threading services in November 2016, and SCTSB started its provision of full Supply Chain Management Services with its own stock yard adjacent to VAM-BRN in January 2017. Since then both companies have been actively operating, in support of Brunei Shell Petroleum's hydrocarbon production operations and in support of the wider vision of Brunei Darussalam Wawasan 2035.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam awarded land lots and house keys to more than 950 recipients under the National Housing Scheme, R-P-N and the Indigenous Citizens Land Scheme, STKRJ in the Brunei Muara District. The ceremony took place yesterday at the Plenary Hall, International Convention Centre in Berakas.


Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, Minister of Home Affairs, Dato Paduka Awang Haji Mohd Roselan bin Haji Mohamad Daud, Acting Minister at the Prime Minister's Office: Dato Paduka Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar, Acting Minister of Development and Awang Misli bin Haji Abdul Karim, Acting Brunei Muara District Officer. The ceremony began with the reading of Surah Al-Fatihah led by Pengiran Haji Shahril Azman bin Pengiran Haji Metussin, Syari'ah Subordinate Court Judge, Brunei Muara District.


The Acting Brunei Muara District Officer in his welcoming speech among other matters said the award of the land lots and house keys portrays His Majesty's care and attention to his subjects. It is hoped that the occupants of the National Housing Scheme homes will always maintain and preserve the harmony of nationhood, establish unity and a neighbourhood spirit, well-being and prosperity in a peaceful environment and mutually respectful as well as adhering to the conditions stipulated by the Housing Development Department.


The presentation of the land lots is for applicants under the RPN Lambak Kanan, Madang, Rimba, Meragang and STKRJ Kampung Mata-Mata (Katok 'B'), Gadong.  Meanwhile the keys for houses, cluster homes and terrace houses are for applicants under the RPN Meragang, Tanah Jambu and Lugu as well as terrace houses under the STKRJ Kampung Mata-Mata (Katok 'B'), Kampung Tungku (Katok 'A) and Lugu. Of the 954 recipients of the land lots and house keys, 222 people were awarded land lots while 732 received house keys. The presentation is an award that is invaluable and meaningful to recipients.


According to the statistics from the Housing Development Department, out of more than 28,000 houses constructed, 26,640 housing units have been awarded to qualified recipients throughout the country. From the number, more than 17,000 units were for recipients in the Brunei Muara District. The award signifies the government's commitment through the Ministry of Development in planning and reviewing the housing provision under the National Housing Scheme to ensure the well-being and harmony of the citizens in line with the development strategy under Wawasan Brunei 2035.


In efforts to ensure the housing provision under the National Housing Scheme is capable of being sustainable, the Ministry of Development has set up a Housing Focus Group Committee to closely study new approaches by reviewing holistically the government subsidy policy, applicant qualification conditions, types of housing to be built by taking into account the availability of state lands.


To bless the ceremony, doa selamat was read by the Brunei Muara District Syariah Subordinate Court Judge. His Majesty's presence portrays the monarch's leadership and personality that places serious attention on the interests and needs of the citizens as well as residents of the country. His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday took part in the 'Riadah dan Kayuhan Keluarga Harmoni 2017', or the Harmonious Family Recreation and Cycling 2017.


The atmosphere in the capital was lively when all walks of life especially families came together to take part in the highlight of this year's National Family Day. The event began and ended at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar 'Ali Saifuddien.


Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, Minister of Home Affairs; Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Othman, Minister of Religious Affairs; Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports; and Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Zulkarnain bin Haji Hanafi, Minister of Health.


Also present were His Majesty's children and brother, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Wakeel and Her Royal Highness Princess Ameerah Wardatul Bolkiah.


The 12-kilometre cycling event began with the release of 20 balloons by child participants. The event was also joined by cabinet ministers, deputy ministers, foreign envoys, permanent secretaries and deputy permanent secretaries, invited guests and the public including foreign nationals.


The cycling route covered main roads namely Jalan Pretty, Jalan Elizabeth Dua, Jalan Masjid Omar 'Ali Saifuddien, Jalan Kianggeh, Jalan Sekolah, Jalan Kumbang Pasang, Jalan Lapangan Terbang Lama, Jalan Muhibbah, Jalan Landasan Lama, Jalan Menteri Besar, Jalan Perdana Menteri, Jalan Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha, and ended at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar 'Ali Saifuddien.


Throughout the route, participants passed by several iconic buildings and historical sites. This includes the Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Mosque which is one of the nation's landmark, and the New Tamu Sungai Kianggeh Complex, a centre of attraction for tourists where it provides facilities as well as comfort for the people and the vendors.


Participants also passed by several primary and secondary education institutions throughout the capital. This includes the Sultan Omar 'Ali Saifuddien College and Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam Secondary School which are among the oldest secondary schools in the country. The route also covered Jalan Lapangan Terbang lama, Berakas where several government buildings are located.


His Majesty's presence at such an activity portrays the Monarch's determination to inculcate healthy lifestyle in the country by participating in sports and recreational activities. His Majesty also gives serious attention on the importance of strengthening the family institution to create a harmonious and united society. Citizens who are healthy and united are able to establish a country that has a more sustainable and productive human resource that can help in the nation's sustainable development.


Before ending the cycling event, cyclists past by the Clock Tower located on what is also known as the Zero Kilometre mark. Apart from being a historic symbol of the relations between Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia, the clock tower is also the point where the first kilometre begins from Bandar Seri Begawan to other areas in the country.


His Majesty and members of the Royal Family then watched a march past by family members comprising of parents, children, grandparents and grandchildren.


His Majesty then signed the appreciation plaque.


After the cycling event, His Majesty took a closer look at the atmosphere of the Family Recreation during the Bandarku Ceria Programme. The theme for this year's National Family Day "Keluargaku Penyayang, Negara Gemilang", signifies the importance of a loving, united and caring family. Members of such a family always respect each other, communicate well and share the common responsibility of ensuring the future of the family, society and country.

Brunei Darussalam and the Government of Saudi Arabia have agreed to explore and collaborate in potential areas of interest including the supply of crude oil from Saudi Arabia to develop Brunei Darussalam's growing downstream petrochemical sector and potential investment by companies from Saudi Arabia.


The agreement was reached during a courtesy call made by His Excellency Khalid Al-Falih, the Minister of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Retired Colonel Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar, Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister's Office. During the bilateral meeting, His Excellency also invited Brunei Darussalam officials to learn Saudi Arabia's experiences in oil and gas industry.


His Excellency's visit to the country is timely with the directive of both leaders, where both countries can have the opportunity to explore further bilateral cooperation and economic opportunities. Both ministers also discussed the potential of extending the existing OPEC and Non-OPEC Declaration of Cooperation signed in December 2016, which has set out the production adjustment of crude oil from participating countries including Brunei Darussalam and Saudi Arabia, for another six months from July to December 2017 that has the main objective of stabilising and rebalancing oil prices.


His Excellency disclosed the matters during a luncheon hosted by the Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister's Office before departing the country yesterday afternoon.​

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office yesterday officiated the 1st Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Innovation Conference and Expo and the Brunei China-ASEAN Expo CAEXPO Exhibition 2017. The exhibition and expo is organised by the Energy and Industry Department at the Prime Minister's Office (EIDPMO) and Darussalam Enterprise (DARe), in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Guangxi Autonomous region of the People's Republic of China. The event is being held at the Bridex Hall in Jerudong.


Upon arrival, His Royal Highness were welcomed by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Retired Colonel Dato Seri Setia Doktor Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar, the Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister's Office, Dato Paduka Awang Haji Mohamad Roselan bin Haji Mohamad Daud, the Acting Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Awang Haji Mohamad Azmi bin Haji Mohd Hanifah, the Permanent Secretary (Industry) at the Prime Minister's Office.


The event commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and doa selamat led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Hamid bin Bakal. His Royal Highness then officiated the 1st Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Innovation Conference and Expo and the Brunei China-ASEAN, CAEXPO Expo Exhibition 2017. The expo is first of its kind in the form of the Made in Brunei Marketing Fair. It acts as a platform for local companies to showcase their products and services.


His Royal Highness also launched the official website of 'www.business.gov.bn', which is a portal that provides the Brunei economic community an easy access to information on procedures, guidelines and services related to business facilitation. The initiative implemented by Darussalam Enterprise, DARe allows high quality local products under the 'Made in Brunei' brand to be marketed through the www.unexpectedtreasures.com.bn webiste. Among them are the Brunei woven fabrics and crystals. The 'Made in Brunei' brand foods and drinks are also showcased at the expo. Several products that are showcased were already marketed at local shopping centres.


His Royal Highness then took a closer look at sales and exhibition booths. About 200 local MSMEs including 31 Kampong Consultative Councils from the four districts are participating in the expo.  It involves various sectors including info-communication technology (ICT), fashion and apparels, green energy and services.


Several local products are also sold and exhibited in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Innovation Expo. Among them are processed foods, pharmaceuticals, home necessities product; cosmetic; Beauty and Health care; Souvenirs and '1 Village 1 Product'. The expo with a theme "Pesta Pasaran Made in Brunei" provides an opportunity for the local Micro, Small and Medium entrepreneurs to show their best in marketing and strategy as well as to promote their products so that users and consumers will support the local products.


His Royal Highness received Pasambah from the exhibitors. The "Made in Brunei" Marketing Fair also provides opportunities to participating investors and distributors to meet with the potential entrepreneurs to establish partnerships and to help the local entrepreneurs to develop and enhance their export potential abroad.  Several companies from Sabah, Sarawak, Vietnam and the Republic of Indonesia are also among the expo participants.

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Her Royal Highness Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah binti Pengiran Haji Salleh Ab-Rahaman yesterday watched a Singapore League football between Brunei DPMM FC and Warriors FC. The match saw Brunei DPMM FC lose 5-3 against the visitors.


Also present were His Royal Highness the Crown Prince's brother and children, His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Malik, Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda 'Abdul Muntaqim and Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Anak Muneerah Madhul Bolkiah as well as other members of the royal family.


Warriors FC took the lead in the 24th minute through Jordan Webb, before Rafael Ramazotti levelled matters with DPMM FC's first goal of the night just before the break. Jordan Webb scored his second goal in the 54th minute, only to be pegged back once again through Billy Mehmet's goal. Warriors FC then went 4-2 ahead through goals from Kento Fukuda and Ridhuan Muhamad. Rafael Ramazotti's goal in the 83rd minute sparked hopes of a comeback, but DPMM FC had to settle for a defeat after a late goal from Joel Tshihbamba settled proceedings. The final score, Brunei DPMM FC - 3, Warriors FC - 5.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam paid His Majesty's last respects to Allahyarham Pengiran Seri Wijaya Pengiran Haji Ahmad bin Pengiran Mohammad Yusof at Kampung Bengkurong yesterday.


Allahyarham passed away at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital at around half past nine yesterday morning at the age of 84. His Majesty also performed the Jenazah prayer led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti.  Also present were His Majesty's son and brother His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah.


Allahyarham was one of the Cheteria 32 (Cheteria Tiga Puluh Dua) and was bestowed the title of 'Pengiran Seri Wijaya' on the 28th of April 2004.   In recognition of Allahyarham's great service to the country and government, His Majesty had consented to bestow State Decorations and Medals to Allahyarham, including Darjah Seri Paduka Mahkota Brunei Yang Amat Mulia First Class, S.P.M.B; Darjah Seri Paduka Mahkota Brunei Yang Amat Mulia Second Class D.P.M.B; Darjah Seri Paduka Mahkota Brunei Yang Amat Mulia Third Class, S.M.B; Pingat Bakti Laila Ikhlas P.B.L.I; Pingat Jasa Kebaktian P.J.K, and Pingat Kerja Lama, P.K.L.  Allahyarham was also a member of the Majlis Mesyuarat Adat Istiadat.  During his lifetime, Allahyarham served in various posts including as Protocol Officer at the Department of Adat Istiadat Negara, Assistant Yang Di-Pertua of Adat Istiadat Negara, and Senior Assistant Yang Di-Pertua of Adat Istiadat Negara. Allahyarham is survived by 10 children, 55 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.  Allahyarham was laid to rest at the Royal Mausoleum.

In the message to His Excellency Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, His Majesty expressed his great sadness to learn of the loss of life caused by the bombing. In ending the message, His Majesty together with His Government and the people of Brunei Darussalam conveyed their deepest condolences and sympathy to His Excellency Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Government and the people of the Republic of Egypt, especially to the bereaved families of the victims.

The Prime Minister’s Office, through its Health, Safety, Security and Environmental Affair (HSSE PMO) as well as the Coordination and Corporate Affairs Division at the Prime Minister’s Office, held a ceremony to renew the appointment of its Fire Marshals at the premise this afternoon. A total of 41 Fire Marshals comprised of officers from the Prime Minister’s Office (PROPER) and the Department of Energy and Industry, Prime Minister’s Office, received their certificates and renewed their appointment today after successfully completing their Fire Marshal training.

The certificates were presented by the Guest of Honor, Yang Mulia Dato Paduka Awang Haji Yahya bin Haji Idris, Permanent Secretary (Corporate and Governance) at the Prime Minister’s Office. In his speech, YM Dato stressed the need for cooperation and coordination among all parties in maintaining and improving workplace safety to ensure a secure and prosperous society, essential for organisational productivity. He added that the implementation of occupational safety framework should also be strengthened in all agencies, in accordance to the regulations stipulated under the Fire Safety Order 2016 and the Workplace Safety and Health Order 2009.

Witnessing the ceremony were Yang Mulia Haji Ahmad bin Haji Mohd Daud, the Head of Public Relations, and other officials from the Brunei Fire and Rescue Department, as well as senior officials at the Prime Minister’s Office. A total of 41 Fire Marshalls renewed their appointment after completing their Fire Marshal training held at the Fire and Rescue Department, Old Airport Berakas. The main goal of the three-day course is for the participants to be equipped with the means to cope in emergency situations, fire and subsequent evacuation of the Prime Minister's Office Building Complex.

In his speech, YM Awang Nor Iswandi bin Haji Rajali, Chief Fire Marshal for the Prime Minister’s Office Building Complex, said that the training is hoped to build a solid foundation for progress in the individuals in terms of discipline, responsibilities, aptitude, honesty and self-confidence as a lifelong practice.

The Prime Minister’s Office also held a number of Fire Drills at its premise prior to the ceremony. The exercise aims to assess the competency of the Fire Marshals in handling various emergency situations, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of the emergency response procedures and plans that are used. Fire Drills will continue to be held regularly to increase the readiness and competency of the Prime Minister’s Office in controlling emergency situations.

Effective dispute settlement mechanism is one vital component of an economic community which includes alternative dispute resolution or ADR. The Honourable Dato Seri Paduka Haji Kifrawi bin Dato Paduka Haji Kifli, The Chief Justice of Brunei Darussalam in his Welcoming address at the 39th ASEAN Law Association Governing Council Meeting (ALA) agreed that ADR has the potential to save time and resources when properly administered and also provides a variety of benefits as an alternative to traditional litigation, such as greater satisfaction to the disputing parties, producing innovative methods of resolving disputes and achieving greater efficiency in reaching settlements.

The two-day meeting was attended by members of the ASEAN Law Association comprising of Chief justices, supreme court justices, attorneys general, Deans of Law Faculties, legal practitioners and Government legal officers from all the ASEAN countries. The meeting is in preparation for the next ALA General Assembly meeting which will be held in Singapore next year.

The climax of TAIB's 25th Anniversary celebration this morning was the presentation of the 25 Year’s Service Awards and Entrepreneurship Programme Awards. His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam consented to present the awards.

Upon arrival, His Majesty was welcomed by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja (Retired) Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Hj Mohd Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports as the Chairman of Perbadanan TAIB Board of Directors, Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Othman, the Minister of Religious Affairs, the Advisor of TAIB, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Besar, Chief Shari'e Judge as the Chairman of TAIB's Shari'ah Advisory Committee and Dato Paduka Dr. Awang haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, the Deputy Minister of Finance as a Member of TAIB Board of Directors.

Also gracing the event were His Majesty's brothers and sons, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah; His Royal Highness Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah; His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Malik and His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Wakeel.

There was a reading of Al-Quran by Awang Muhammad Azib bin Muhammad Azim, a student of the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Tahfiz Al-Quran.

In the welcoming address, the Chairman of TAIB Board of Directors underscored the 25 years since the establishment of TAIB and its measures to establish Islamic Banking subsidiaries in the near future. Yang Berhormat said it is hoped with the establishment of the Islamic banks, TAIB will progress into the era of digital technology and focus on customer demands inline with changing times, competitive products, broad networking with the Perbadanan TAIB brand becoming an international class Islamic financial institution.

Since its establishment on the 21st of September 1991, TAIB continues to develop and provide quality and excellent Islamic banking services in the country.

At the ceremony, His Majesty consented to present 25 Year’s Service Awards to 17 TAIB employees. The establishment of TAIB was the beginning of Islamic Financial Institutions in the country. It was created in upholding and realising His Majesty's vision and far sightedness to establish an Islamic financial institution that operates according to Shara' or Islamic laws.

His Majesty also consented to present TAIB's Entrepreneurship Programme Awards to 10 selected entrepreneurs. The programme conducted in January 2017, provided local Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, MSMEs, the opportunity to develop their businesses, simultaneously supporting the government economic diversification efforts. The 1st Award was won by Awang Haji Loqman Al-Hakim bin Haji Hamdan, the owner of Syarikat Al-Huffaz Management who received five thousand dollars. Receiving three thousand dollars, was Awangku Ahmad Akram bin Pengiran Haji Muhammad Idrus, the owner of Syarikat Steamy Ridez and Cleaning Services, the runner-up. In third place was Doctor Nirwan bin Nasir, the owner of Syarikat Simvolous Consultancy & Medical Supplies Sendirian Berhad, who also received two thousand dollars.

The Doa Selamat was read by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti.

During the Audience Ceremony, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and His Excellency Saleumxay Kommasith discussed bilateral relations as well as exchanged views on regional and international matters.  Accompanying the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao People's Democratic Republic was His Excellency Amphay Kindavong, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Lao People's Democratic Republic to Brunei Darussalam.  Also present during the Audience Ceremony was Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock Seng, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Muizzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Minister of Defence and the Supreme Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, RBAF has graced a farewell ceremony for 640 personnel of the First Battalion of the Royal Gurkha Rifles.

The Battalion is ending its 4-year tour of duty in the country. The ceremony took place at the Garrison Officers' Mess in Kuala Belait. Upon arrival, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam was greeted by Lieutenant Colonel Charlie Crowe, the Commander of British Forces Brunei (BFB). Shortly after the arrival, His Majesty received the Royal Salute and inspected the Guard of Honour mounted by personnel of the Royal Gurkha Rifles under the command of Captain Ganesh Kumar Gurung.  The Gurkha Rifles is an infantry regiment of the Gurkha Brigade who are in the service of the British Government.

During the visit, His Majesty consented to officiate the promotion of three Warrant Officers to Captain. Also present was His Excellency David Campbell, the British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam and Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohammad Tawih bin Abdullah, the Commander of the RBAF.

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam then witnessed a demonstration of a military operation.  The demonstration involved personnel of the Rifle Company and Special Weapons Platoon of the Royal Gurkha Rifles and RBAF personnel.

His Majesty also drove an ATV to watch the beach and sea operation demonstration. From the Garrison Officers' Mess in Kuala Belait, His Majesty proceeded to Tuker Lines Base in Seria to watch a cultural performance and an exhibition as well as mingle with the families of the Royal Gurkha Rifles Battalion.  Shortly after arriving at the Chit Chat Community Centre, His Majesty witnessed a combined performance involving the First Battalion of the Royal Gurkha Rifles and the Third Battalion of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces.

His Majesty then viewed an art exhibition by the pupils of Hornbill School and interacted with the school teachers and pupils. The Hornbill School has more than 320 pupils aged between 3 to 11 years old, the majority of whom are children of the Royal Gurkha Rifles personnel. The Gurkhas' traditional cooking also attracted His Majesty's interest during the tour of Tuker Lines base. Shortly after that, His Majesty watched a traditional Nepali cultural performance that further enlivened the event.

His Majesty then consented to receive a Pasambah in the form of a Marble Sculpture decorated with the symbol of the Royal Gurkha Rifles. The 640 personnel the First Battalion of the Royal Gurkha Rifles will return to the United Kingdom. They will be replaced by the Second Battalion in July this year.  His Majesty's presence at the farewell ceremony is a reflection of the unique relations between Brunei Darussalam and the United Kingdom based on mutual trust, respect and close cooperation in various fields including defence, education and energy.

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office in a sabda outlines measures towards improving and ensuring the performance and quality of the country's representatives to Quran Reading and Memorisation Musabaqah abroad.

His Royal Highness also stresses that it is important to ensure the Musabaqah which the country participates in are at least National level or organised by the governments of the host nations.  His Royal Highness made the sabda at the opening of the Finals of the National Quran Reading Musabaqah For Adults at the Plenary Hall of the International Convention Centre in Berakas.  In the sabda, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince also highlights the theme of the musabaqah, "Al-Quran temanku Menceriakan Hidupku" saying it is in-line with the call of the Zikir Nation because  Al-Quran is the Ummul Kitab or the Main Religious Book that was revealed directly to the last Messenger of Allah.

Upon arrival at the International Convention Centre, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince was greeted by Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Othman, Minister of Religious Affairs, in his capacity as the Chairman of the Musabaqah Executive Committee, as well as other committee members.

Also in attendance was His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Malik ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah. The ceremony began with the reading of Surah Al-Fatihah led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Besar.

The Minister of Religious Affairs, in his welcoming address, said that the Al-Quran Reading Musabaqah began at the zone or district levels, where participants are required to score 75 percent and above to be selected for the quarter finals. From the 93 participants who made it through to the quarter finals, only 57 participants advanced to the semi finals.

His Royal Highness the Crown Prince in the sabda says among the routines of a Muslim is being close to Al-Quran, by reading and understanding its contents which remind us of the Greatness of Allah the Almighty. Continuing the sabda, His Royal Highness stresses befitting the 57 years of the Musabaqah, certainly much experience have been gained in organising and adding value to the impact of national religious events.  Hence the experience should be the benchmark in measuring the country's achievements in the aspect of Quran reading.

Touching on efforts to improve the quality of Quran reading, His Royal Highness proposes that the country reviews the method of inviting renowned international Al-Quran experts so that the country's readers would gain the optimum benefit from their presence.  This includes inviting more international experts. The Musabaqah Al-Qur'an is held for 3 consecutive nights. The first night saw 4 participants presenting their readings.

The first phase of the large scale solar project in the Temburong district is expected to be completed this year. Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Retired Colonel Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar, Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister's Office disclosed the matter in his opening remark on Departments of Energy, Industry, Department of Electrical Services and the E-Government National Centre. Yang Berhomat Pehin also shared on the oil and gas production that has successfully increased oil and gas reserves for another 50 years.

According to Yang Berhormat Pehin, this year, the country's oil production is expected to be at 134 thousand barrels a day compared to 139 thousand barrels a day in 2016. The reduction, among other things, is due to natural decline, deferment as well as the country's commitment to OPEC. In 2016, the oil and gas sector has successfully increased the overall amount of oil sources and reserves to 90 million Barrel of Oil Equivalent, BOE that increases the lifespan of oil and gas reserves for another 53 years. Touching on the renewable energy, a large scale solar project will be implemented in the Temburong district to replace the Belingus Generator Station which operates on diesel. The first phase involving 23% of the project is expected to be completed this year.
