15.06.17 Committed Offences

Five business premises in the Belait District were found to have committed offences under the Price Control Act, such as exceeding the fixed maximum price for goods, not displaying price tags, and not complying with sales regulations.

The offences were uncovered during surprise visits by the Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE), through the Consumer Affairs Division to several business premises in the Belait district yesterday. The 10-member delegation comprising officers and staff from JPKE, was led by Pengiran Hajah Siti Nirmala binti Pengiran Haji Mohammad, Acting Permanent Secretary (Economic and Finance) at the Prime Minister's Office.

Among the objectives of the visit is to ensure controlled goods under the Price Control Act, Chapter 142 namely cooking oil and formulated powdered milk are not sold over the maximum set price, while rice are not sold exceeding the fixed subsidised prices. The visit also intended to ensure that businesses comply with the Price Control Act, Chapter 142 and the Price Control Order which require goods sold to display clear price labels.

Businesses which are not in compliance with the Price Control Act can be handed a compound not exceeding $1,000.00, a fine of $5,000.00 and a 2 years' imprisonment as well as a $20,000.00 fine and a 5-year jail term for repeated offences. Meanwhile, businesses which are found to exceed the maximum prices set for the months of Ramadhan and Syawal will be liable to action such as being issued a warning notice.
