09.08.17 His Royal Highness' Unscheduled Visit



His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office in a sabda underlined the importance of hard work and self confidence for students in order to achieve individual excellence, as they are the most valuable assets for continuous national development in the future. His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, as the sponsor and Chairman of the PENGGERAK Steering Committee, yesterday made unscheduled visits to two schools in the Brunei Muara District. In the sabda, His Royal Highness also highlighted the major role of teachers to ensure that each student is given necessary support and guidance.

His Royal Highness the Crown Prince first visited the Masin Secondary School. Upon arrival, His Royal Highness was greeted by Dayang Hajah Laila Kartika binti Mohammad Noor, the school's Deputy Principal.

His Royal Highness toured the school's vicinity, and observed several learning sessions in classes, where His Royal Highness himself listened to the teacher's teaching methods to improve the student's learning. Such a visit provided the opportunity for His Royal Highness to make direct observation on the school's daily routine as a continuation of His Royal Highness' efforts to ensure that all teaching and learning strategy is implemented consistently and effectively, and are making positive impacts to the student's learning.

His Royal Highness then chaired a dialogue session with the Deputy Principal and senior teachers on the school's development, particularly in the efforts to make the learning process of each student more effective. A short presentation was also held during the discussion on the School Progress Plan, covering improvement methods and strategies, as well as monitoring the implementation and development of the school's teaching and learning aspects.

His Royal Highness' visit represents the overall efforts of His Majesty's government through the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Religious Affairs pertaining to the primary and secondary level through several initiatives, such as preparing students for the Programme for International Student Assessment, PISA next year and the Literacy and Numeracy Guidance Programme. The overall aim is also to uphold the titah of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to improve the quality of education and teachers in the country towards the realisation of the Wawasan Brunei 20-35.

Currently, the Masin Secondary School has 995 students and 109 teachers. The school celebrated its 10th anniversary in June last year. Before the school's establishment, students were temporarily placed at the Sayyidina Hassan Secondary School. The Masin Secondary School was built on a 4.3 acre land under the 8th National Development Plan, costing over $14 million and took 20 months to be completed.

His Royal Highness then visited the Bengkurong Primary School. Upon arrival, His Royal Highness was greeted by Dayang Atikah Rumaizah binti Doctor Haji Harun, the school's Headmistress. His Royal Highness observed a number of lessons, and delivered a sabda to Year 6 students, reminding them to study diligently and to follow the advice of their teachers and parents.

His Royal Highness concluded the visit with a dialogue session with the Headmistress and senior teachers on the school's current initiatives which focused on enhancing the school's teaching and learning.

The construction of the Bengkurong Primary School began in 1960, and was completed a year later. Formerly known as Sekolah Melayu Bengkurong, the school initially had 25 pupils and 2 teachers. Now, the school has 194 students and 30 teachers.

Throughout the visit, His Royal Highness was accompanied by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Ibrahim, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister of Finance; Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Mohd Roselan bin Haji Mohd Daud, Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister's Office; and Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, Deputy Minister of Education. Also present were Datin Paduka Doctor Dayang Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohammad Salleh, Permanent Secretary of Core Education, Ministry of Education, Dayang Nadia Lee Siew Hoon binti Abdullah, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Core Education, Ministry of Education as well as the ministry's senior officers.
