Dato Hamdan started his career as a Diplomatic Officer, Brunei Research Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1989. In early 1993, Dato Hamdan was involved in the establishment of the Internal Security Department (ISD). On the 1st of August 1993, Dato Hamdan was appointed as a Staff Officer at the ISD and since then has played a crucial part of the department’s progress and development. In 1996, he was promoted to Senior Staff Officer before being appointed as Assistant Director in 2002 and Deputy Director (Research) in 2006.

In 2009, within three years of his appointment as Deputy Director, Dato Hamdan was made acting director of ISD before being confirmed as Director in 2010, a post that Dato Hamdan still holds until today. During 2010, Dato Hamdan was also promoted as Permanent Secretary (Security & Enforcement) at the Prime Minister’s Office, a post which he held for five years. 

On the 22nd of October 2015, by command of His Majesty The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Dato Hamdan was appointed as Deputy Minister (Security and Media) at the Prime Minister’s Office. Dato Hamdan is also currently the chairman of the Brunei Strategy Council (BSC) and the National Security Committee.

Dato Hamdan graduated with a B.A. in Public Policy & Administration from the University of Brunei Darussalam (UBD) in 1989. During his years at UBD, he was chosen to participate in a year’s study abroad at the University of Kent at Canterbury, England where he obtained a University Diploma in Social Sciences in 1988. Dato Hamdan further pursued his studies by obtaining a Masters in International Relations from Griffith University, Queensland, Australia in 2009.

Amongst Dato Hamdan’s honours and awards are as follows:
16th July 2012: Darjah Seri Paduka Mahkota Brunei Yang Amat Mulia Darjah Kedua, (D.P.M.B).
2008: Darjah Seri Paduka Mahkota Brunei Yang Amat Mulia Darjah Ketiga, (S.M.B).
2001: Darjah Setia Negara Brunei Yang Amat Bahagia Darjah Keempat, (P.S.B).
12th April 2011: Long Service Medal, (P.K.L)

On 24th November 2015, he was awarded with the “Meritorious Service Medal” by the Government of the Republic of Singapore. 

Dato Hamdan was born on 17th October 1963. He is married to Datin Hajah Zainon binti Abang Haji Omarzuki and has been blessed with two daughters and a son. During his free time, Dato Hamdan enjoys reading and golf.
