Awang Zulhusam started working for the Government of His Majesty The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam on August 19, 1997, and has been in service for over 25 years.
He became a Staff Officer at the Internal Security Department (ISD), immediately after completing his Bachelor of Arts (English Medium) degree at the University of Brunei Darussalam (UBD) in 1997.
In 2003, he became the head of the Defence Executive Committee (DEC) Secretariat at the Prime Minister’s Office while continuing his duties at ISD. He started working full-time at DEC in 2004, which was later renamed to National Security Committee (JKN) Secretariat in 2005.
After 6 years at the JKN Secretariat, Awang Zulhusam enrolled in the Masters of Science (Asian Studies ) programme at the Rajaratnam School of International and Strategic Studies (RSIS) at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Upon completion of his studies in 2010, he returned to work with ISD in Brunei, where he has held the position of Deputy Director (Operations) since 2021.
On July 22, 2023, Awang Zulhusam was appointed as Deputy Permanent Secretary (Security and Law) at the Prime Minister's Office. He continues to serve as ISD's Deputy Director (Operations).
Awang Zulhusam is married to Dr Salbrina binti Haji Sharbawi, a Senior Assistant Professor at UBD, and together, they have been blessed with 4 children.
